I remember my first NYO Inspire Day vividly. We played Swan Lake at Durham University. I was relatively new to classical music and very new to orchestral music-making so I was extremely nervous. However, I managed to find my confidence all thanks to the brilliant NYO Musicians helping me throughout the day and I loved it!
Since then I have attended as many NYO Inspire activities as I could, including the first-ever NYO Inspire Ensembles and NYO Inspire Orchestra in 2015. To finish off my two-year journey with NYO Inspire, I took part in my final NYO Inspire Day, where we played the ‘Prelude’ from Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Barbican. It was definitely one of the most memorable moments I have had, and it will stick with me for a very long time.
It has always been amazing to find and learn something new at each workshop, and I always admire the way NYO shares and reaches out through music. The NYO Inspire Days have truly changed me as a musician and they have been a great influence on me.
I am delighted that I have been accepted to study oboe at Birmingham Conservatoire from September. Without NYO Inspire and the experiences I have gained from the fantastic team, I wouldn’t have imagined being able to get there. There is no doubt in my mind that NYO Inspire helped me grow into the musician I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful.
NYO Inspire Ensembles will continue this February at the University of Liverpool, welcoming 302 musicians. The next NYO Inspire Day is on 19 March at Wade Deacon High School, Widnes. To reserve your free place, just sign up by 19 February.
