We’re excited to announce some incredible collaborations for our 2016/2017 season at the Barbican! We’re teaming up with our friend the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam this December for true orchestral brilliance.
NYO Musicians will have the opportunity to be mentored by players from the Concertgebouw Orchestra, sitting side-by-side in rehearsals and performing with them on the concert stage on 17 December in Wagner’s Prelude from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
On the next day, 18 December, we take this process a step further with an NYO Inspire Day. This joint project with the Barbican and LSO On Track will involve 100 young people from East London Music Hubs and have NYO Musicians pass on their learning from the Concertgebouw Orchestra to these young musicians through peer-to-peer sharing and coaching. The NYO Inspire Day then culminates in a public performance with NYO Musicians and the young musicians from the Music Hubs on the Barbican stage.
Then in 2017, we return back to the Barbican on 9 April for our annual concert, venturing into new soundscapes with charismatic Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto and teenage cellist Sheku Kaneh-Mason, fresh off from winning BBC Young Musician 2016. What’s in store will be Shostakovich’s Cello Concert No. 1 and Symphony No. 5, alogn with rarely performed music by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas Night of the Mayas.
We’re already getting goose bumps just thinking about these upcoming projects – hope to see you at the Barbican in 2016/2017!
