Going Beyond this summer

Beyond tour reviews, BBC Proms clips and more.

We’re still buzzing from the energy of last week’s Beyond tour. A fitting finale to a summer where musicians from the NYO Community went beyond in every way. From inspiring school students with the power of live orchestral music to soaring to new heights in sold-out concert halls, this journey was a celebration of young musicians pushing themselves further than they have before.

Last week, the Orchestra launched into an interstellar musical voyage, touching down in Birmingham, Snape Maltings and London. Together with conductor Dalia Stasevska, they performed the most epic orchestral music from Star Wars, Holst’s The Planets and Caroline Shaw’s The Observatory, before bringing the house down with an iconic NYO encore – an a cappella version of Feeling Good which brought the audience back down to Earth in style.

The tour culminated in a sold-out BBC Proms double bill at the Royal Albert Hall. First up was the evening Prom on Saturday 9 August, with a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Musicians followed this up with Relaxed Prom on Sunday 10 August and shared their love for music in an informal setting, together with NYO’s associate conductor, Tess Jackson, and presenter, Linton Stephens.

Our BBC Proms performance will be broadcast on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer later this season and the full performance is now available on BBC Sounds.

We already feature on the BBC’s ‘must watch tracks’ on BBC iPlayer, available now:

Here is what reviewers had to say about the Beyond performances…

Beyond concert halls…

During the summer residency and tour, musicians from The National Youth Orchestra went beyond to bring orchestral music directly to young people across the country.

  • At youth centres across Lancashire and Greater Manchester, musicians delivered live performances and creative workshops, inspiring the next generation of music-makers.
  • In Staffordshire and Suffolk, local teenage musicians joined the Orchestra for special Side by Side rehearsals – experiencing the excitement and power of making orchestral music together with more people their age.
  • Over the summer, NYO musicians took their passion back to their own communities, visiting local primary schools and reaching over 12,000 students through interactive performances and workshops.
