30 minutes that can change everything for a young musician auditioning for the Orchestra

Help cover a pre-audition session that could transform a teenage musician’s audition experience

This August, hundreds of hopeful teenage musicians will bring all their hard work, dedication, and passion for orchestral music to the final round of auditions for the Orchestra of 2027. But for some of these musicians, this opportunity will be their first ever experience of an orchestral audition. And lack of access to tutoring or specialised training can put these young people at a disadvantage, regardless of all the hours spent preparing on their own.

To help ensure all those taking part can make the most of the audition experience, NYO offers one-to-one pre-audition sessions. These sessions help level the playing field for young musicians who haven’t had the valuable experience that can make all the difference in an audition. Through coaching from world-class tutors in their instrument, musicians like Tara receive extensive guidance on each excerpt and receive key insights so every single one can enter the audition room feeling as prepared and confident as possible.

A lot of people auditioning were from junior conservatoires and schools with great music. I hadn’t had that. My pre-audition session was so beneficial. It showed me how to think in a different way.

Most importantly, these pre-audition sessions are completely free for all musicians who take part.

£30 covers one half hour session that can change everything for a musician attending auditions for The National Youth Orchestra.
