An explosive return to live music-making for NYO with conductor Jonathon Heyward, and soloist Jess Gillam. Music is the lifeblood of hope, building bridges between generations and traditions. CHANT, a new commission from Laura Jurd makes hope a communal reality. Janáček’s The Fiddler’s Child is inspired by a folk tale in which a boy is lured from life by music. Britten’s Temporal Variations is taken on by saxophonist Jess Gillam. Jessie Montgomery’s Records from a Vanishing City celebrates the musical eclecticism of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is one of the composer’s most joyful, hope-filled engagements with the folk tradition he loved.
