Prokofiev’s ballet score is packed with more great tunes than a Spotify playlist, allowing our extraordinary musicians to display their awesome might in the grand Montagues and Capulets theme and their thoughtful sensitivity in the delicate dances and lyrical laments.

Unashamedly dramatic and filled with extravagant gestures, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is the kind of music you put on repeat when you want to rage at the world or mend a broken heart. The soloist is Nicola Benedetti who effortlessly combines the breath-taking playing of a genuine superstar with being a down-to-Earth role-model for a generation of ambitious teenage violinists.

And finally, a cautionary tale for teenage boundary-pushers everywhere. Lera Auerbach’s eerie tone poem is fifteen minutes of almost unbearable, watch-through-your-fingers tension as Icarus soars towards the sun and his inevitable death. But our determined and ambitious teenagers allow us to experience these stories and come through the other side, changed and uplifted by the experience we’ve shared together through music.

Totally teenage orchestral brilliance. Come and hear it.
Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Lera Auerbach Icarus

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain
Mark Wigglesworth conductor
Nicola Benedetti violin
