NYO Inspire orchestra kicks ofF

This weekend starts off a 10-day celebration of epic teenage orchestral music-making on the national level. 74 young musicians from around the UK are coming together to form our second-ever NYO Inspire Orchestra, continuing the bold mission to give breakthrough experiences of orchestral music to teenagers of all backgrounds, both as musicians and as audience members.

After 6 days of rehearsals at the University of Wolverhampton, they will embark on a 4-day concert tour of the West Midlands, bringing orchestral music to their peers in diverse places from schools to art venues to a youth centre. You can catch them in action at mac birmingham (Fri 8 July 6pm)  and Forest Arts Centre (Sun 10 July 4pm) - more info here. The tour also takes them to Heartlands Academy, Selly Park Technology College for Girls, South Bromsgrove High School, and The Way Wolverhampton Youth Zone, which will be a special highlight of giving over a hundred teenagers their first-ever live orchestral experience.

Employing the power of peer inspiration and leadership, NYO Inspire Orchestra enables many more teenagers to experience the raw energy and power of live orchestral music-making...while also having a great deal of fun along the way. Look at what last year's first-ever NYO Inspire Orchestra got up to!

This year, NYO Inspire Orchestra will be even more imaginative and give a theatrical performance of Nina Rota’s circus-themed La Strada (the score from the Italian film by Federico Fellini), taking on a unique rendition of the piece that creatively integrates spoken word and movement. Forcusing on peer sharing and learning, the Orchestra will also lead workshops for musicians from local music hubs and schools on exploring what an orchestra is.

Also in other NYO Inspire news, there’s still time to sign up for our upcoming NYO Inspire Days in Birmingham (25 July) and Leeds (25 Sept). These are free immersive days of orchestral workshops and rehearsals centred around peer learning, where young musicians get the chance to work closely with NYO Musicians, Tutors, and our Conductor. If you’re aged 13-19 and playing at grade 6 or above, sign up here for your free place as soon as possible. For Birmingham, all spaces are filled, except for the following instrument groups: bassoon, cello, clarinet, double bass, oboe, trombone, tuba, and viola.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for stories from our NYO Inspire Orchestra musicians…
