Hi, my name is Shesh and my main studies are percussion and double bass. I also play guitar, piano, drum kit, bass guitar and enjoy singing. I have admired NYO for a while and wanted to get involved. I knew some musicians who were part of NYO, and they all loved it. I was very happy when I got invited to my first NYO Inspire Day last year. During the day, I had such a good time playing alongside NYO musicians and I knew I wanted to get involved more.
At the beginning of 2020, I was lucky enough to take part in the NYO Inspire Ensembles in Liverpool, which was simply fantastic. I learned a lot from our double bass tutor and other musicians in such a short time. I think at NYO you learn so quickly because everyone is approachable and helpful. Everything you do is led by the musicians, you feel valued and the NYO Team is just there to help. The staff couldn’t be nicer, and I felt very well looked after. At the end of the residency, we had a concert which I really enjoyed as I love performing to an audience.
Unfortunately, when Covid-19 hit, everything changed. I was worried that it would mean that there would be no more projects happening, but it was amazing that NYO managed to carry on digitally and got many of us involved. Spending time with other young musicians virtually, has really helped me during this period, as it is hard for all of us not to be able to come together and play.
Determined to make the most of the circumstances, I have been involved in many musical activities. Some with school, other orchestras, music courses and also practising at home. This is very important to me, as I am able to explore music in a way that I was not able to do before. I am also involved in playing music for care home residents and it made me realise how important music is especially in times like these; music can help others to be able to cope a little better.
Being part of NYO Inspire made me even more passionate about music because it is brilliant to come together with many committed and passionate teenagers. The organisation is one big community all striving for the same goal. When I participated in my first activity with NYO I was very nervous, but that didn’t last long as I immediately felt part of one big family. The moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by friendly faces. During the NYO Inspire Ensembles, I especially enjoyed the instrument sectional rehearsals, working with tutors and asking all the questions I never had a chance to ask before. I have made friends for life with people who have similar interests. You don’t often have the chance to come together with so many teenagers in one place and do what you love. Being part of NYO Inspire gives you a real insight into NYO, an orchestra comprised of passionate teenagers showing the world that classical music matters.
This is Shesh’s story. What could yours be?
